Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has said it has shot and killed two suspected terrorists in an early morning operation in Munyonyo, a high-end suburb of Kampala.
The army said the suspects were intercepted and neutralized in a counter-terrorism operation led by intelligence.
The incident comes just a day before the country marks Martyrs Day, an annual religious event that draws thousands of pilgrims and heightened security measures.
“The security services are on heightened alert to ensure the Martyrs Day celebrations proceed without disruption,” said Colonel Chris Magezi, the acting Director of Defence Public Information, in a statement released Tuesday morning.
Authorities did not disclose the identities of the suspects or the nature of the threat they posed, but urged the public to remain vigilant.
“The general public is urged to remain calm but vigilant and report to the security services any suspicious individuals, objects or activities for immediate attention,” Magezi said.
There were no reported casualties among security forces, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
Martyrs Day, commemorated annually on June 3, honors Ugandan Christians killed for their faith in the late 19th century and is considered one of the country’s most significant religious observances.
