A 1km section of the Mityana-Mubende Highway at Kalonga has become completely impassable due to heavy rainfall, leading to severe traffic disruptions. The situation has been exacerbated by ongoing maintenance works, which have not only failed to mitigate the issue but have contributed to increased congestion and significant delays for motorists.

The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has issued an urgent traffic advisory, recommending that drivers avoid the affected stretch at Kalonga. “Due to the slippery conditions caused by the heavy rains, coupled with the ongoing roadworks, we are advising all motorists to use alternative routes,” stated a UNRA spokesperson.

Suggested detours include the Myanzi-Kassanda-Maddudu-Kiyuuya route to rejoin the highway, or for those traveling between Kampala and Mubende, using the Hoima Road via Kiboga and Kakumiro. Travelers heading to Fort Portal are advised to proceed to Hoima and then take the route through Kagadi to Kyenjojo before continuing to their destination.

Posts on X have echoed the severity of the situation, with users reporting partial roadblocks and heavy traffic jams, urging fellow travelers to plan their journeys accordingly, especially during this festive season when road travel is expected to increase.

The rains have made the road conditions at Kalonga particularly hazardous, with vehicles struggling for traction, leading to several instances of vehicles getting stuck or involved in minor accidents. Efforts are underway to clear the backlog, but with the weather forecast predicting more rain, UNRA and local police forces are bracing for continued challenges.

UNRA has assured the public that they are working diligently to restore normal traffic flow as swiftly as possible once the weather permits. Meanwhile, they are asking for patience and cooperation from the public in adhering to the detour suggestions to minimize further disruption and ensure safety.

This incident underscores the vulnerability of infrastructure to natural elements and the importance of timely and effective road maintenance to cope with such weather-related challenges. Motorists are advised to stay updated through UNRA’s official communications and local traffic updates for the latest on this situation.
