Nyendo-Mukungwe legislator Mathias Mpuuga has threatened to sue National Unity Platform party president Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, over allegations that he masterminded the arrest of MPs Allan Ssewanyana and the late Muhammad Ssegirinya.

On Tuesday, May 6, 2025, Wine said at a press briefing that he had been informed by the deceased legislator Ssegirinya that his former deputy president Mathias Mpuuga had masterminded their arrest. Wine asked Ssewanyana to confirm the allegations, to which he responded in the affirmative.

Ssewanyana and the late Ssegirinya were arrested in 2021 over the mass killings in Masaka. It is after this arrest that Ssegirinya’s health began to deteriorate, leading to his demise early this year.

In response to the allegations, Mpuuga said on Wednesday that he intends to sue his former party president, Bobi Wine, and MP Allan Ssewanyana. The Nyendo-Mukungwe legislator said the allegations are defamatory and should be retracted.

“This attempt to taint my name and rewrite the painful history of persecution we all endured is not only false, it is defamatory. If they do not retract and apologize, I will have no choice but to pursue legal redress,” he said.

“Some people abandoned the late Muhammad Ssegirinya while he was suffering in the hospital. Apart from his family, few offered genuine support—some visitors only came seeking allowances or taking selfies for media attention, which has sadly become a trend,” he added.

The allegations come at a time when Bobi Wine’s bodyguard, Edward Ssebufu, alias Eddie Mutwe, is battling charges of aggravated robbery, assault, and malicious damage to property at the Masaka Court, where MPs Ssewanyana and the late Ssegirinya were first arraigned and sentenced over the Masaka Massacre.
