Muhammad Luwemba, the longtime aide of the late Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya, has been nominated to contest for the seat left vacant by his former boss’s passing.

Luwemba, formerly known as Alex Lusswa Luwemba, officially changed his name to Muhammad in honor of Ssegirinya, whose legacy he says he wants to continue.

His academic documents still bear his former name, but his national identification card reflects the change.

A copy of the deed poll confirming the name change has been submitted to the National Unity Platform (NUP) Electoral Committee.

Ssegirinya’s family has endorsed Luwemba as his political successor, saying he was the closest person to the late MP and understands the needs of Kawempe North.

His mother, Justine Ssanyu Nakajumba, said the family believes he will continue Ssegirinya’s work and advocacy.

“My son’s legacy must continue, and we believe he understands the people’s needs and will continue to advocate for them,” Ms Nakajumba said last month.

Meanwhile, NUP has confirmed eight contenders in the race for its party flag, with lawyer Elias Nalukola Luyimbazi among those approved.

Several aspirants faced hurdles, including Kulya Saulo Zziwa, who was rejected over document certification issues, and Salim Serunkuma, who was initially turned away for failing to present a formal letter of interest.

The NUP Election Management Committee is set to announce the official party flag bearer on February 5.

Ssegirinya, 39, passed away on January 9, 2025, at Lubaga Hospital after suffering from brain failure and multiple organ collapse.

The election to replace the late Ssegirinya is slated for March 13.
