Security Guard Arrested After Killing Boss, Stealing Vehicle and Cash

Police have arrested Hilary Byaruhanga, a private security guard attached to Don World Security Limited, who allegedly shot and killed his boss before robbing cash and a vehicle.

Byaruhanga had been on the run since Sunday following the killing of Anthony Mutinisa, 53, the proprietor of Mutinisa Motors.

Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke confirmed on Monday evening that Byaruhanga was apprehended in Kanungu, where he had been hiding.

“The suspect allegedly shot Mutinisa in cold blood on Sunday evening and fled with the victim’s car, registration number UA 769 BQ, which has now been recovered in Katwe Cell, Kihihi Town Council by police in Kanungu,” Rusoke said.

Byaruhanga was arrested alongside Mark Akampa, whose role in the crime is still under investigation.

Authorities say the arrest of both suspects will help them uncover more information about the motive behind the killing.

Police investigations indicate that Byaruhanga not only stole cash but also disabled CCTV coverage by removing video footage, allowing him to flee with Mutinisa’s latest Toyota Land Cruiser V8 SUV.

Colleagues told police that the guard was on Don World Security’s payroll and also received a separate salary directly from Mutinisa.

Over time, Byaruhanga had been entrusted with company errands, trained to drive, and granted access to core operations, casting doubt on speculation that he might have acted out of workplace mistreatment.

Following the murder, Byaruhanga reportedly sent chilling text messages to company staff and his supervisor at Don World Security around 7pm, stating: “Something bad has happened.”

The stolen SUV was tracked to Kanungu District, near the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) border, raising concerns that the fugitive intended to cross into Congo. Military Intelligence has since joined police in the pursuit.

Authorities are reviewing Byaruhanga’s past activities and communications to determine if he acted alone or as part of a larger plan.

Police have urged anyone with information about the case to come forward, as investigations continue.

The recovered SUV will be returned to the family, while cash recovered is being accounted for.
