Police in Kira Division are investigating a tragic fire that claimed the lives of six family members in the early hours of Thursday morning in Bukasa, Kirinya, Bweyogerere, Wakiso District.
According to a statement from the Kampala Metropolitan Police, the incident occurred at around 3am at the residence of 45-year-old Fred Ssekabila.
A loud blast reportedly startled the neighbourhood, prompting residents to rush to the scene in a bid to help.
However, their efforts were hampered by flames that had already engulfed the house.
“Concerned neighbors rushed to offer assistance; however, the fire had already engulfed the house, making rescue efforts extremely difficult,” said ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police.
Police and the Fire Prevention and Rescue Services responded swiftly to contain the fire, managing to stop it from spreading to nearby properties.
When investigators arrived, a gruesome discovery awaited them.
“Upon arrival, a team of investigators was introduced to the scene. During their inspection, they sadly discovered six bodies in the debris,” ASP Owoyesigyire said.
The victims were identified as Ssekabila and his wife Winiefred Gonja
The couple’s children Gloria Nabuya, 20; Peace Nakakira, 16; Hellen Nakamya, 9; and Bryan Nebula, 7, all died in the incident.
The bodies were transported to City Mortuary Mulago for postmortem examination.
While the cause of the fire is yet to be officially established, police say early leads suggest a disturbing possibility.
“Preliminary investigations, including statements from Ssekabila’s friends, suggest that he may have been exhibiting signs of suicidal behaviour,” said ASP Owoyesigyire, noting that this theory remains unconfirmed and is still under active investigation.
“We wish to express our sincere condolences to the affected family and community. We remain committed to uncovering the full circumstances surrounding this incident. Further details will be shared as soon as they become available,” he added.
The incident has left residents in shock and mourning, with community leaders urging for improved mental health support and emergency response readiness.
