Mastercard Foundation Scholars Alumni Aid Buyende’s Education with New School Infrastructure

In an effort to tackle the deeply rooted issues of low educational attainment and underdevelopment in Buyende District, alumni from the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Makerere University have taken significant steps. Recognizing the direct correlation between educational facilities and poverty alleviation, the alumni have launched a community support initiative, starting with St. Kizito Primary School.

The scholars have constructed a modern latrine at the school, addressing one of the most basic yet critical needs for students, especially in terms of hygiene and dignity. Additionally, they donated 62 desks, providing much-needed seating for students who previously had to learn in less than ideal conditions, often sitting on the floor or sharing inadequate materials.

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world,” echoed one of the alumni, drawing inspiration from Nelson Mandela’s words. “But how can we expect change when our children are learning under conditions that do not foster growth or dignity?”

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to improve educational outcomes in Buyende, where poverty has long been both a barrier to and a result of low educational attainment. The lack of proper infrastructure has been a significant impediment, contributing to high dropout rates and poor academic performance.

The impact of these contributions is immediate and palpable. Teachers at St. Kizito have reported increased attendance and student engagement since the desks were installed, noting that students now come to school with a sense of pride and readiness to learn. The new latrine has also significantly improved hygiene conditions, reducing absenteeism related to health issues.

Local leaders and community members have expressed their gratitude and optimism. “This is a beacon of hope,” said the headteacher of St. Kizito. “It shows our children that with education comes opportunity, but also that the community and the world beyond care about their well-being.”

The alumni’s initiative is not a one-off; they plan to extend similar support to other schools in Buyende, aiming to create a ripple effect of educational improvement. They are also seeking partnerships to fund further projects, like solar lighting for evening studies, and to engage in teacher training programs to enhance educational quality.

This effort by the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Alumni highlights a path forward in the fight against poverty through education, setting a precedent for community involvement and alumni giving back to their roots, potentially transforming Buyende one school at a time.
