Gen Mugisha Muntu Nominated as ANT Presidential Flagbearer for 2026

The Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) has kicked off its nomination process for the 2026 general elections, with Maj Gen (Rtd) Mugisha Muntu Gregg becoming the first presidential aspirant to be screened and confirmed by the party’s Electoral Commission.

Speaking after submitting his nomination papers, Gen Muntu reaffirmed ANT’s commitment to forming a broad-based opposition alliance, citing ongoing collaboration with the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), with whom the party already shares strategic understanding.

“We are still working in harmony with PFT. Once their primaries are concluded, we shall sit and agree on candidates across different positions,” Muntu said.

He also revealed that the party is engaged in dialogue with the National Unity Platform (NUP) in a bid to avoid the fragmentation that undermined the opposition during the 2021 polls.

“We are still negotiating with NUP. If we find common ground—even if not on everything—we should be able to move together to avoid repeating the mistakes that cost the opposition in the past,” he added.

ANT Electoral Commission Chairman Dan Mugarura confirmed that the nomination window for presidential aspirants remains open until July 27.

“We have two more days to receive nominations. After that, we shall announce the party’s official presidential flagbearer,” said Mugarura.

He added that nominations for other elective positions are ongoing nationwide and that a consolidated report on all nominations will be issued by the end of the month.

“We’ll consolidate nomination results from all districts and give the country a full report by July 30,” he said.

Gen Muntu’s nomination increases speculation that he will once again lead ANT into the presidential race, as the party renews calls for coalition-building and a peaceful transition of power in Uganda.
