VOA Veteran journalist Shaka Ssali has died

Veteran Ugandan journalist and broadcaster Shaka Ssali, who was widely known as the face of Voice Of Africa, has passed on at age 71.

In an official statement released online, it was revealed that Shaka Ssali passed away in Virginia, USA, just two weeks shy of his 72nd birthday.

“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Shaka Ssali, the longtime host of VOA’s Straight Talk Africa. Ssali, a revered journalist and broadcaster, passed away at the age of 71 two weeks shy of his 72nd birthday, leaving behind an indelible legacy in African journalism,” the statement reads.

His cause of death is yet to be established, but he has had a longtime ailment.

Ssali was the face and voice of Straight Talk Africa for more than 20 years. The show engaged African leaders, analysts, and citizens in critical discussions on democracy, governance, and development.

His insightful interviews and unwavering commitment to press freedom will forever be remembered.

It should be remembered that Shaka Ssali’s recent appearance was through a video on social media in which he cleared the air following a death hoax rumour that made rounds in April 2024.
