Sseggona Backs NUP Vetting Process, Calls It a Test of Leadership Commitment

As the National Unity Platform (NUP) commences its week-long vetting exercise for parliamentary flag bearers in Kampala, Busiro East MP and senior party member Medard Lubega Sseggona has urged Ugandans to give the process a chance, describing it as a test of the party’s democratic values and leadership integrity.

The vetting, which kicked off on Monday, July 28 at the party headquarters in Makerere-Kavule, targets constituencies across the Kampala Metropolitan Area.

It is seen as a crucial step in NUP’s preparation for the 2026 General Elections.

“We look forward to a fair, transparent and successful vetting exercise,” said Sseggona, reaffirming his confidence in the internal mechanisms guiding the selection of party flag bearers.

He challenged skeptics to reserve judgment until the process is concluded.

“Why don’t you give the NUP vetting process a chance to see if and how it works and then judge the success?” he said.

NUP, which emerged as Uganda’s leading opposition party after the 2021 elections, is using this vetting to streamline candidates in key urban constituencies, including Lubaga, Kawempe, Nakawa, Makindye, and Kampala Central. The process is expected to reflect the party’s ideological foundation of “People Power.”

“NUP is based on people power. Throughout, we want to engage the power of the people,” Sseggona emphasized, noting that the process is rooted in collective decision-making and grassroots legitimacy.

He also highlighted the personal responsibility of party members to submit to the system. “I have subjected myself to the NUP processes because I am a member of the party and I will subject myself to all democratic party processes,” he said.

Describing the vetting exercise as more than just administrative, Sseggona added: “The NUP vetting process is a test on our commitment to the struggle and the kind of leadership we want to give to the country.”

The vetting, which runs until Friday, August 1, 2025, begins at exactly 8:00 AM each day. All activities are being held at the NUP Secretariat in Makerere-Kavule.
