Hundreds of National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters thronged the party headquarters as Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya officially submitted his expression of interest forms for the Kampala Central Member of Parliament seat ahead of the 2026 general elections.
Rubongoya, a key figure in the NUP hierarchy and close ally of party leader Robert Kyagulanyi, was accompanied by Moses Kataabu, who is eyeing the Kampala Central mayoral seat, and former Kampala Mayor Charles Sserunjogi, who is vying for a position as a KCCA councillor.
Speaking shortly after handing in his forms to the party’s electoral commission, Rubongoya vowed to “revolutionise Kampala” if elected, promising to confront what he called a legacy of dysfunction and elitism in the city’s leadership.
“I believe I can serve both as Secretary General of our great party and as Member of Parliament. I’ve always multitasked, and this won’t be any different,” Rubongoya said to chants of “People Power” from his supporters.
His declaration sets the stage for a high-stakes contest in Kampala Central, a constituency currently represented by Muhammad Nsereko. Rubongoya’s entry is expected to energize the NUP base in the capital, where the party commands significant grassroots support.
This is a developing story.
