Preparations for the 2025 Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations are in high gear at both the Anglican and Catholic shrines in Namugongo, with security visibly intensified and final site works underway ahead of the June 3 event.
At the Anglican site in Nakiyanja, officers from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces have been deployed at the main entrance to boost security.
Organizers were seen painting signage and posts to guide the thousands of pilgrims expected, while cleaners worked to ensure the site is clean and welcoming.
Despite financial constraints, the Chairperson of the Organizing Committee at the Anglican site, Bishop Godfrey Loum, said preparations are on track.
“Fortunately, we have taken care of that by engaging service providers who have signed MOUs and started work. We will pay them when we get all the amount we need,” he said.
Across at the Namugongo Catholic Shrine, similar scenes are unfolding.
Security presence has been heightened, altar preparations are almost complete, and cleaning efforts continue throughout the grounds.
Pilgrims from different parts of Uganda and the region continue to arrive, many walking long distances to pay tribute to the Uganda Martyrs.
“We have our personal intentions and wanted to present them at the holy ground,” said Adong Judith, a midwifery student.
The celebrations will climax on Tuesday, June 3rd, with thousands expected to gather in remembrance of the martyrs who died for their faith.
