Uganda’s road safety strategy has taken a digital leap with the rollout of the Intelligent Transport Monitoring System (ITMS), a technology-driven initiative that combines artificial intelligence, GPS tracking, and automated enforcement to crack down on reckless driving.
A joint project between the Ministry of Works and Transport and the Ministry of Security, ITMS is being implemented through a 10-year public-private partnership with Russian firm Joint Stock Global.
The system aims to reduce traffic violations and protect lives through real-time monitoring and penalties.
Central to the ITMS framework are two innovations: digital number plates and the newly introduced EPS Auto enforcement system.
