The Ministry of Works and Transport has announced that the Karuma bridge along the Kampala-Gulu highway will be reopened on Monday.
Karuma was closed in March shortly after it had reopened to pave the way for full reconstruction works.
Today, Saturday, the Works Ministry said that necessary installations have been made, and the bridge will reopen on Monday.
“The Ministry of Works and Transport (MoWT) is pleased to inform the public that Karuma and Ayago Bridges along the Kampala-Gulu Highway will be reopened to all traffic on the morning of Monday, 14th April 2025,” the Ministry announced.
“This follows the successful installation and curing of expansion joints. These are critical components that allow the bridge structure to expand and contract with temperature changes and traffic loads, thereby maintaining its structural integrity and extending its lifespan.”
While the bridge reopens, additional works such as the installation of guardrails, street lighting, river training works, cat’s eyes installation, and painting of structural steel plate girders under the bridge will continue.
These works, the ministry said, will not affect traffic flow.
Karuma Bridge lies along the major highway connecting the northern and southern halves of Uganda, as well as being the transit route between the coastal ports of Mombasa and Dar es Salaam and South Sudan.
The 62-year-old Karuma Bridge is very vital for trade and travelers to and from northern Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and South Sudan.
