False Claim: UK Has Not Suspended Uganda Airlines’ London Flights

A viral social media claim alleges that British Foreign Secretary David Lammy has “sensationally ordered the immediate suspension” of Uganda Airlines’ direct flights to London’s Gatwick Airport due to human rights concerns.

This claim, posted widely on Facebook and X(formerly Twitter) is FALSE and lacks credible evidence.

Uganda Airlines has refuted the allegation, confirming that its Foreign Carriers Permit remains valid and preparations for the inaugural flight on 18 May 2025 are on track. There have been no official statements from the UK government, the Civil Aviation Authority, or the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) regarding any suspension of the airline’s operations. A search of UK government press releases and official communications provides no support for the claim.

Notably, British High Commissioner to Uganda, Lisa Chesney, attended the route announcement event, underscoring the flight’s importance in strengthening economic and cultural ties between the two countries.

Furthermore, The Ministry of Works and Transport has also refuted the claim that the flights have been suspended by the British Foreign Secretary David Lammy.

The claim also attempts to link the alleged suspension to the imprisonment of Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye, but no credible connection exists between Uganda Airlines’ operations and political events in Uganda. This appears to be an effort to manufacture a false diplomatic crisis.

Conclusion

The claim that David Lammy ordered the suspension of Uganda Airlines’ flights to London is baseless. No evidence from official UK sources, reputable news outlets, or aviation authorities supports it. Uganda Airlines continues preparations for its scheduled London service.
