The New Injection Stands For Hope To Ugandans

A new HIV prevention drug, lenacapavir, offers fresh hope in the fight against HIV. Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the drug is injected twice a year and shows high success in preventing new infections.

Lenacapavir is given under the skin and works as a long acting pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Trials show better results than daily HIV pills, with some studies recording zero new infections.

The drug is currently only available in the U.S., but health organisations are working to bring it to Uganda at an affordable price. Officials warn the government may not be able to provide it for free, but efforts are underway to make it accessible.

“I urge religious and community leaders to support HIV prevention education and avoid spreading fear or stigma by emphasising the use of the different prevention methods” said Dr.Dan Byamukama.

“This injection reveals to the nations that this super tested drug that brings hope to the patients of HIV” said David Lutaaya from X.The injection is approved for both men and women, but only after confirming they are HIV-negative and have no signs of recent infection.
