Mpox outbreak in South Sudan

The Ministry of Health of South Sudan has declared an outbreak of mpox in Juba, Central Equatoria State, following the confirmation of a case on 6 February 2025.

The patient, a Ugandan national residing in Kupuri Camp, is currently isolated and receiving treatment at Gudele Hospital.

The outbreak raises concerns for neighboring Uganda due to frequent cross-border movements between the two countries.

The porous border allows for regular movement of refugees and traders, increasing the risk of disease transmission.

As of 27 January 2025, Uganda has recorded a cumulative total of 2,462 confirmed mpox cases and 16 deaths, with the majority concentrated in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area, particularly Kampala and Wakiso districts.

In response to the outbreak in South Sudan, health authorities, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and other partners, are ramping up control measures, including treatment of confirmed cases, contact tracing, testing, and infection prevention to curb the spread of the disease.

Acting Health Minister James Hoth Mai urged citizens to remain calm and follow safety measures, emphasizing the government’s commitment to containing the outbreak.

WHO Country Representative in South Sudan, Dr. Humphrey Karamagi, commended the Ministry of Health for its proactive response, noting that the declaration enables the public to take preventive measures and assists health partners in mobilizing resources.

Given the strong ties between South Sudan and Uganda through trade and refugee movements, both nations must strengthen surveillance and response efforts.

Collaborative strategies will be crucial in mitigating the risk of cross-border transmission and safeguarding public health.
