Besigye Calls Off Hunger Strike After Court Appearance in Nakawa

Dr. Kizza Besigye, the opposition leader, has called off his hunger strike following his appearance in Nakawa Chief Magistrates Court today. Besigye, who had been fasting in protest of his continued detention, was brought to court in a wheelchair but appeared determined during the brief session.

Besigye, who has been outspoken against government policies, was arrested on allegations related to his anti-government activities.

His hunger strike, which had sparked widespread attention, was meant to protest what he called “unjust detention” and a “flawed political system.”

Appearing in court, Besigye told journalists, “I have decided to end my hunger strike today after seeing that there is some recognition of my presence here. However, I remain resolute in my pursuit for justice and will continue to speak out against oppression.”

Besigye, who was accompanied by his legal team, was visibly frail but maintained his stance against the government. “This is not the end of my fight; it’s just a pause. We are fighting for a fair and just society,” he said.

The court proceedings were brief, and Besigye was returned to detention after his appearance. Despite his weakened condition, his resolve remains unshaken, signalling that he may continue his activism through other means.

The case has drawn attention both locally and internationally, with calls for his immediate release.

The situation remains fluid as Besigye’s supporters rally for his freedom.
