A shocking incident unfolded on Sezibwa Road in Kampala when a police officer, identified as No. 55915 PC Bahati Charles, allegedly shot and killed a motorist, Julius Ssemwaka. The event took place on the afternoon of December 23, 2024, causing immediate distress and prompting a manhunt for the officer who fled the scene with his weapon.

According to a police statement, the shooting occurred when PC Bahati, for reasons yet to be fully clarified, discharged his firearm at Ssemwaka, who was driving a car with the registration number UAX 480C. The incident took place between Sheraton Hotel and State Lodge, Nakasongola, an area known for its high traffic.

Following the shooting, Bahati disappeared, leading to an extensive search operation by the police forces. “A search operation is underway to locate him,” confirmed the Police Spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma, emphasizing the urgency of apprehending the fugitive officer. Investigations have been initiated to understand the circumstances leading to the shooting, with promises of forthcoming details as the investigation progresses.

The incident has sparked concerns over public safety and the conduct of law enforcement officers. Social media platforms, particularly X, have been abuzz with posts from eyewitnesses and concerned citizens demanding justice for Ssemwaka and accountability for the police force.

This tragic event occurs against a backdrop where the community is already sensitive to issues of police brutality and the misuse of power. Calls for transparency and reform within the police ranks have intensified, with many questioning the training and psychological evaluation of officers to prevent such occurrences.

The Kampala Metropolitan Police are now under scrutiny to not only capture Bahati but also to ensure that such incidents are thoroughly investigated, with appropriate measures taken to restore public trust in law enforcement. As this story develops, the community awaits further updates, hoping for justice for the victim and measures to prevent future tragedies.

The incident on Sezibwa Road is a stark reminder of the need for vigilance, accountability, and reform within Uganda’s policing system to safeguard the lives of its citizens.
