Three suspected robbers were shot dead on the evening of Saturday, June 28, during a police pursuit that followed a violent robbery attempt at a mobile money shop in Lungujja, Rubaga Division, Kampala.
According to a statement issued by Police Spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke, the incident occurred at around 8pm as officers from Nateete Police Station were conducting a routine patrol in the area.
“The officers on patrol responded to a distress call from a man who was being attacked by a group of robbers outside his mobile money kiosk,” he said.
“The officers found the suspects engaged in a physical struggle with the victim, attempting to steal a black bag containing cash.”
As the area Officer in Charge (OC) moved in to arrest one of the suspects, another allegedly pulled out a panga, prompting one of the officers to fire a warning shot into the air.
Startled, the assailants fled the scene.
A motorcycle squad from the police pursued the fleeing suspects to the Stabex fuel station in Mengo, where a shootout ensued.
Two of the suspects were fatally shot on the spot, while a third, who sustained gunshot wounds, died while being transported to Mulago Hospital.
Two others managed to escape on a numberless motorcycle and are currently being hunted by police.
Recovered at the scene were several key exhibits, including UGX 8,435,000 in cash, two mobile phones used for mobile money transactions (MTN and Airtel), the victim’s National ID, and house keys.
Police also confiscated two motorcycles—a maroon Haojue registration number UGE 294X and another without plates—as well as two pangas.
“We commend the swift action of the officers involved and continue to pursue the suspects who remain at large,” Rusoke said.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
