Experts Warn of Rising Narcissistic Behaviour in Society

Psychologists are raising concerns over the growing prevalence of narcissistic behaviour in modern society, cautioning against its potential effects on relationships, workplaces, and mental health.

Narcissism, marked by an inflated sense of self-importance, a constant need for admiration, and a lack of empathy, is becoming increasingly evident in social and professional settings.

Dr Jane Musoke, a clinical psychologist, links this trend to the influence of social media and cultural shifts that reward self-promotion.

“Platforms like Instagram and TikTok encourage individuals to seek validation through likes and followers, fostering unhealthy self-centeredness,” Dr Musoke notes.

Research highlights the challenges faced by individuals exhibiting narcissistic traits, particularly in maintaining meaningful relationships.

Their focus on self-interest often alienates friends and family, while in workplaces, such behaviour can create toxic environments.

Domineering leadership styles and a lack of collaboration are common issues, undermining team cohesion.

To counter these trends, experts emphasize the need for fostering emotional intelligence and empathy. “Parents, educators, and leaders should focus on teaching humility and compassion,” Dr. Musoke advises.

While narcissistic traits do not always meet the threshold for a clinical diagnosis, their societal impact is undeniable.

Mental health professionals encourage those struggling with narcissistic tendencies to seek support, particularly if these behaviors disrupt daily life or harm others.
