Uganda is set for a pivotal political moment as President Museveni prepares to formalise his candidacy for the positions of National Chairman of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and the party’s presidential flag bearer ahead of the 2026 general elections.
Museveni’s nomination is scheduled for today, Saturday at the NRM Electoral Commission offices.
This comes after his nationwide wealth creation tours, which focused on promoting the Parish Development Model (PDM).
According to State House, during his tours across all 18 zones of Uganda, local leaders and community members repeatedly urged him to remain in leadership.
“Many cited the stability and development achieved under his administration since he first assumed office in 1986. Calls for continuity were dominant, with supporters highlighting progress in agriculture, healthcare, education, and infrastructure,” State House said in a statement.
Party insiders say Museveni has already secured the required endorsement signatures from at least 100 members of the NRM National Conference, as per the party’s electoral guidelines. This milestone reaffirms his firm grip on both the party and national politics.
“The strong show of support reflects widespread backing within the NRM and across the country. Many supporters view Museveni as a symbol of continued stability and steady economic growth.”
As the party prepares for his official nomination, expectations are high that Museveni’s candidacy will set the tone for a robust election campaign in the months ahead.
For many Ugandans, particularly in rural communities, Museveni’s leadership is seen as essential for safeguarding peace and accelerating national development.
